    In 1530, an expedition led by Martim Afonso de Sousa arrived in Brazil to create settlements

    This marks the first Portuguese settlements in Brazil.
  • 1549

    Tomé de Sousa went to Brazil to establish a central government

    De Sousa brought along Jesuits who set up missions.
  • 1555

    French forces occupy Rio de Janeiro harbor

    Portugal regains control and establishes the city of Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1557

    Mid 1500's sugarcane establishment

    The first sugarcane farms were established. Import slaves from Africa.

  • Dutch withdraw from Brazil

    After several years of war with Portuguese the Dutch withdrew.

  • GOLD!

    Gold is discovered in Brazil's interior.

  • Portugal gives up Colonia de Sacramento in the treaty of Utrecht (aka Spanish Succession)

    In 1945, military dictator Vargas is deposed by the military in a surprise coup.

    This was the beginning of of the New Republic

    In 1989, the first elections for president by direct popular vote since the military coup were held. Also, they got the first woman president in 2010.
