    In 1530, an expedition led by Martim Afonso de Sousa arrived in Brazil to create settlements

    This marks the first Portuguese settlements in Brazil.
  • 1549

    Tomé de Sousa went to Brazil to establish a central government

    De Sousa brought along Jesuits who set up missions.
  • 1555

    French forces occupy Rio de Janeiro harbor

    Portugal regains control and establishes the city of Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1557

    Mid 1500's sugarcane establishment

    The first sugarcane farms were established. Import slaves from Africa.
  • Dutch withdraw from Brazil

    After several years of war with Portuguese the Dutch withdrew.

    Gold is discovered in Brazil's interior.
  • Portugal gives up Colonia de Sacramento in the treaty of Utrecht (aka Spanish Succession)
