Horthy Regime

  • Numerus Clausus

    The law allowed the admission of any nationalities to the universities according to the proportion of their presence within the society. It was a discrimination against the Jews and in Hungary 5% were Jews and in Budapest 20%.
  • Horthy was elected Regent of Hungary

    Horty became the head of the state by the help of the army. From this date till 1944 lasted the Horthy regime.
  • Trianon

    Hungary lost 2/3 of its territory with Hungarians living there. Due to the treaty natural resources,mines,industrial centers and railway wings were taken away. Hungary's military force was regulated, the Entente weakened the country. After the treaty revisionism became the fundamental aim of the Hungarian political life.
  • Count Bethlen István

    He was the prime minister of Hungary from 1921 till 1931.He created a united governing party, the Party of Unity, in 1922. During his decade in office, Bethlen led Hungary into the League of Nations and arranged a close alliance with Fascist Italy, even entering into a Treaty of Friendship with Italy in 1927.
  • The first royal coup

    Charles IV unexpectedly returned to Hungary and negotiated with Teleki, who failed to inform Horthy about the plan of the king. Charles IV met Horthy and Horthy refused to support him due to the protests and threats by the Allied Powers. Due to these events Teleki was compromised and resigned.
  • Imrédy Béla

    He was the prime minister from 1938 till 1939.He became fescinated with Nazism and he wanted to copy the Nazy state. He even offered unlimited power to Horthy which he refused. He supported the extremist rights and in 1939 Horthy fired him.
  • First Vienna Award

    Because of the ethnical question Hungary regained the Southern parts of Upper Hungary(12000km2). I million inhabitants lived there, 85% were Hungarians. The act was supported by Germany and Italy.
  • Ruthenia

    Hitler gave Hungary 24 hours to invade Ruthenia, which belonged to Cechoslovakia, and the Hungarians occupied the territory. It was justified on strategic and historical grounds. 12000km2 was gained with 600000 people living there(only 7% were Hungarians.).
  • Second Vienna Award

    Hungary regained Northern Transylvania(43000km2) with 2.5 million inhabitants but only 50% were Hungarians. It was Hitler's and Mussolini's idea. In consequance the Hungarian foreign minister resigned and the Romanian fainted.
  • Southern Provinces

    Hungary is still neutral in the Second World War. Hitler offered the Southern Provinces to Hungary and the Hungarian political elite had no power to refuse. At that time Hungarian troops occupied the area and a lot of people were killed there, a massacre happened(Bácska-Bánát-Baranya Triangle and Mura-köz). Hungary gained 11500km2 and 1 millio people lives there, 35% Hungarians. Seres Tibor wrote Hidegnapok about the massacre.
