  • The First Opium War

    The First Opium War
    The British traded China opium, a drug. The drug started a lot of social disruption in China, so the Chinese government tried to block the trade. The first war ended in 1842.
  • Britain Takeover

    Britain Takeover
    Britain defeated China in the Opium war, and China is forced to give up the Hong Kong territory in the Treaty of Nanking, a peace treaty between the United Kingdoms and the Qing Dynasty taken after the First Opium War.
  • Sino Japanese War

    Sino Japanese War
    Thousands of refugees from mainland China flee to Hong Kong in hope to escape the fighting Japanese. The war finally stopped in 1895.
  • Japanese Occupation

    Japanese Occupation
    The invasion to take over Hong Kong lead to food shortages, and a lot of people moved to mainland China. The Hong Kong population dropped by more than 300,000 people. The invasion ended in 1945.
  • Leftist Riot

    Leftist Riot
    An anti- British struggle causes leftist riots to start, and a few protestors even put bombs on the streets. The riots only stopped in premier Zhou Enlai expresses Beijing's disapproval in December that year.
  • The Handover

    Hong Kong is handed to China after over 150 years of living under British control.
  • First Chief Executive

    First Chief Executive
    Tung Chee- Hwa is elected as Hong Kong's first Chief Executive by Hong Kong's 400 member selection committee.

    China and Hong Kong are hit with a disease called SARS. SARS, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, which makes it hard for you to breathe and gives you a really high fever.

    Almost all of Hong Kong take part in a protest in favour of getting a say in future elections of the city's chief executive.
