    The U.S capital is moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C on June 15, 1801. The United States Congress moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in 1800. Several different cites served as the national capital during the early years of the United States. Congress decided the country should have a permanent center of government.

    War of 1812
    US declares war against Britain over British interference with American shippings and westward expansion. The United States ended up winning the war of 1812. There were many battles across the country.
  • Battle of Lake Erie

    Battle of Lake Erie
    Oliver Hazard Perry leads a fleet of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The Americans won the war. This battle was a major decider in the battle.
  • Akron becomes a city

    Akron was originally laid out in 1825 and in 1841 became the seat of Summit County.The name came from a Greek word meaning "an elevation" or "point." Akron is located between 2 rivers
  • Underground Railroad established

    The Underground Railroad was established to aid enslaved people in their escape to freedom. The railroad was comprised of dozens of secret routes and safe houses originating in the slaveholding states and extending all the way to the Canadian border, the only area where fugitives could be assured of their freedom.

    The canal opens. The canal joins the cuyahoga river and the Ohio river. The canal helped the spread of goods throughout Ohio and New York . Made economy flourish.

    The population of Cleveland quickly grew. The population was 6,071 people. Cleveland became the 45th largest city in the nation. Clevelands population grew exponentially in the later years.

    The compromise admits California as a free state into union. But as a result, the fugitive slave act was started. Many Ohioans ended up moving to California.

    Buchtel college founded
    John R. Butchel founds butchel college, which later becomes university of Akron. The university had a fire and was fully rebuilt and renamed. Named University of Akron.

    The disease called epizoot which is also referred to as influenza, affected horses all across the country. This caused thousand of horse deaths. Also caused more human labor.
  • Goodrich becomes a business

    Dr. Ben Franklin Goodrich moves his rubber factory to Akron from New York. In 1880 Goodrich became what is now one of the largest tire companies.

    Harvey firestone comes to Akron
    Firestone come to Akron. Firestone relied on other companies to manufacture the rubber. His firm simply fastened the rubber to steel carriage wheels. In its first year of operation, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company grossed more than 100,000 dollars in profit.

    The wright brothers do the first flight. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet.

    All-American city
    Cleveland has landed the title several times and other Ohio cities are among the more than 500 nationwide to land it since it started in 1949. Clevelands performance during the war helped maintain the city's image.
