    Publishing of Webster's Dictionary
    Noah Webster published his first dictionary in 1828, but the exact date is unknown. This dictionary did not give British spellings, but American spelling. The significance of the Webster Dictionary was that it allowed the United States to have something to be proud of instead of just using the British dictonary.

    Election of 1828
    The Election of 1828 was between Adams and Jackson, after Adams had won at the previous election in 1824 against Jackson. The significance of this election was that it changed the ideas of the Democracy. No longer were they following the Jeffersonian Democracy, but they were following the Jacksonian Democracy.

    Lowell Massachusetts Girls labor strike
    In 1835 to 1836, the young girls and women in Lowell, Massachusetts, who worked in mills, went on strike. They were demanding better working conditions, less hours, and higher pay. Because of their strike, it gave working standards for everyone else.

    Battle of the Alamo
    In their fight for Independence from Mexico, about 200 Texans defened the abandoned building know as the Alamo as long as they could, but after 13 days, the thousands of Mexican soldiers defeated them. This event became known as the Battle of the Alamo. The significance of it was that it fired the Texans up, and make them want independence.

    Beginning of the Trail of Tears
    Cherokee Indians were lead form their homes and forced to move west into the "Indian Territory." It was a very sad time because the Indians did not have a say in where they lived, and the Indian's moving conditions were terrible. One fourth of around the 16,000 Cherokees died durring the Tail of Tears. It was important to the U.S. because it forshadowed the problems with the Indians that would soon come.

    Joseph Smith was a Mormon leader who was killed by and an anti-Mormon mob.The signnificance of Joseph Smith's death was that when he died, Brigham Young became the new leader, and moved the Mormons to Utah. That is how Untah became settled.

    The Irish Potato Famine was a result of potato blight.This caused about one million people in Ireland to die, and about another million to emigrate out of Ireland. Ireland lost roughly twenty to twenty-five percent of its popluation in this time. Because many Irish imigrated to the U.S., diverse.

    Frederick Douglass publishes autobiography
    In 1845, Frederick Douglass, a famous abolitionist speaker, published his first autobiography which talked about his life as a slave. He wrote this autobiography to prove that even if you had a bad past, you can still make big accomplishments in your life. It was significant to the U.S. because it inspired people who were poor.

    Thoreau writes Walden
    In Walden, Henry Thoreau spoke about his life in the woods. He said that people should not live up to other people's standards, and instead, you should only go at your own pace. He gave very good advice to all of the U.S., and helped set up a new philosophy called transcendentalism.

    Beginning of the California Gold Rush
    In Coloma at Sutter's Mill, James W. Marshall first dicovered gold in California. This started the California Gold Rush. 300,000 people from all over the country traveled to California in search of wealth. The significance of the California Gold Rush is that it made them wealthy and settled land.

    The Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty stated that Texas was part of the United States with the Rio Grande being the border. Also, they agreed apon the Mexico Cession being part of the Untede States.
  • Seneca Falls Convention

    Seneca Falls Convention
    This convention held in Seneca Falls, New York, was about women's rights. It lasted for two days and included six sessions. A document know as the Declaration of Sentiments was signed by one third of the people who attended the convention. The significance of this advent was that it gave women more rights.
