    UNIFEM officially established
    UNIFEM was established in 1984, after being formally established away from the Voluntary Fund for the UN Decade for Women in 1976. At the time, UNIFEM was the only gender-specialised agency in the UN, which endeavoured to be a catalyst for ensuring the involvement of women in mainstream development activities and finance.

    In 2010, the UN General Assembly voted to create a new entity committed to the emancipation of women, named the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, or UN Women. Secretary Ban-Ki Moon was quoted as saying “I have made gender equality and the empowerment of women one of my top priorities”, and the subsequent merge of UNIFEM and four other gender-equality focused bodies, was a result of his commitment to making a greater impact in the area of gender equality.
