  • Pan-American Health Organization formed

    The Pan American Health Organization was formed aside from the "Pan American Union" (which was to become the General Secretariat of the OAS), to focus specifically on health issues. PAHO would become the regional office of WHO in later years.
  • Fifth International Conference of American States held

    The Fifth International Conference of American States was held in Santiago, Chile. The Treaty to Avoid or Prevent Conflicts Between American States (Gondra Treaty) was adopted. The Gondra Treaty would become a guideline for policies and protocols developed by the Inter-American Defense Board.
  • Seventh International Conference of American States held

    The Seventh International Conference of American States was held in Montevideo, Uruguay. The Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, which reaffirmed the principle that “States are juridically equal, enjoy the same rights, and have equal capacity in their exercise,” reiterated the principle that no state has the right to intervene...in the...affairs of another, and underscored the obligation of all States “to settle any differences that might arise between them through recognized...method
  • Inter-American Defense Board formed

    The Inter-American Defense Board is formed to unify the Americas in the event of attack by a foreign nation, as well as to outline procedures should one member state attack another.

  • Conference on Inter-American Problems of War and Peace in Mexico City held

    Member states discussed joint actions with the United Nations, and the Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Continental Peace and Security about the problems in Mexico City.

    UN Established
    The United Nations is formally established.
  • Ninth International Conference of American States held

    The Ninth International Conference of American States was held in Bogota, Colombia. The Charter of the Organization of American States was officially adopted by the now-21 strong organization. The American Treaty on Pacific Settlement, and the American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man are adopted. The OAS developed a relationship with the UN.
