    AAIDD worked to promote progressive policies, continue research, implement effective practices, and provide individuals with intellectual disabilities with rights.
  • Council For Exceptional Children

    The council was formed with 12 members.
  • Department of Special Education is established

  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    The Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to segregate schools by race.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESA)

    ESA called for equal access to education regardless of economic status.
  • PARC vs. Pennsylvania

    Students with disabilities are to be placed in public schools that met their individual educational needs.
  • Mills vs. Board of Education

    All students with disabilities are able to attend public school regardless of disability.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Individuals were protected from discrimination based on their disability.
  • PL 94-145 The Education of All Handicapped Children Act

    All states that accepted money from the federal government were required to provide equal access to education for children with disabilities. FAPE - Free Appropriate Public Education
  • Americans with Disabilities Act - ADA

    This granted civil rights to individuals with disabilities, individuals with disabilities cannot be discriminated against.
  • Individuals with Disability Act - IDEA

    Previously known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act.
