  • BROWN v. BOARD OF EDUCATION

    BROWN v. BOARD OF EDUCATION

    U.S. Supreme Court ruled that U.S. state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools are unconstitutional. Oliver Brown filed a class-action suit against the Board of Education of Topeka after his daughter was denied entrance into Topeka's all-white elementary schools. As a result, the Court ruled he was being “deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Link text
  • CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

    CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

    Civil Rights Act made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. Black students faced harassment and often abused as they enrolled in previously all-white schools. The Civil Rights Act was later expanded to bring disabled Americans, the elderly and women in collegiate athletics under its umbrella.

    REHABILITATION ACT - SECTION 504

    prohibits the denial of public education participation, or enjoyment of the benefits offered by public school programs because of a student’s disability. It guarantees the right to full participation and access to a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

    EDUCATION FOR ALL HANDICAPPED CHILDREN ACT

    Requires public schools to provide appropriate educational services for all children with disabilities between ages 3 and 21. It provide administrators with proof of compliance, teachers with formalized plans, parents with a voice, and students with an appropriate education. Along with assurances of nondiscriminatory evaluation, individualized educational planning, and education in the least restrictive environment.

  • PERKINS ACT (THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION ACT)

    PERKINS ACT (THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION ACT)

    Authorizes federal funds to support vocational education programs. The law states that individuals who are members of special populations (including individuals with disabilities) must be provided with equal access to recruitment, enrollment, and placement activities in vocational education.

    INDIVIDUAL WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT

    *EHA named changed to Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). a law that makes available a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children. Before EHA, many children were denied access to education and opportunities to learn. In 2018-19, more than 64% of children with disabilities were in general education classrooms. Link Text
  • NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

    NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a law that applies to not only special needs students, but all students within the United States. NCLB requires that students from 3rd to 8th grade (including an additional year in high school) take an annual government designed assessment in mathematics and reading. The Reading First and Early Reading First programs allows NCLB to provide tier II and tier III interventions in all areas under the reading umbrella.
