    American School for the Deaf

    America's oldest and still running school specifically for people who are deaf. They have provided models for educational programs and teacher trainings. All grade levels are offered at the American School for the Deaf.
  • The Bradley Home

    The Bradley Home

    The first psychiatric hospital for children in the US. The Bradley Home offered placements to poor and needy families in Rhode Island and only charged what they could afford. It is still operating today.
  • Ind with Disabilities Improvement Act

    Ind with Disabilities Improvement Act

  • Easterseals

    Easterseals

    Originally called the National Society for Crippled Children, it was inspired to bring children with disabilities into public view. Organization became Easterseals in 1967 and was a leading advocate of the ADA.
  • Elem. and Secondary Ed. Act

    Elem. and Secondary Ed. Act

    Created to regulate that funds were being sent to schools with large amounts of low income families. This was to help close the gap in skills in reading, writing and arithmetic.
  • Special Olympics

    Special Olympics

    Came together by Eunice Kennedy Shriver who wanted to help children with intellectual disabilities to focus on what they COULD do rather than what they cannot do.     Mills vs Board of Ed. of DC

    Ruled that students with disabilities must be offered a public educations even if they are unable to pay for their education. Children were denied education due to their disabilities before this supreme court ruling.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Required all public schools who were accepting money from the government to provide equal access and one free meal a day to children with physical and mental disabilities. Schools were also required to create an educational plan for the students with disabilities and allow parent input for these plans as well. Parents also had the choice to dispute decisions made about the education their children were receiving.
  • Best Buddies

    Best Buddies

    Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver to "foster one-on-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities" (2020). The organization is active in all 50 states and has programs in 56 international territories and countries.
