  • First Special Education Class in Public School

    First Special Education Class in Public School
    Rhode Island established the first special education class in a public school. Prior to, and at this time, it was common for people with disabilities to be placed in residential asylums or sanitariums and not educated.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    Landmark Supreme Court Case establishing that Education cannot be equal if students are in schools separated by race, and therefore segregation is unconstitutional. This opened the door for activists to fight for similar inclusion rights for students with disabilities.
  • PARC V. PA

    PARC V. PA
    The Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established, among other requirements, the concept of FAPE. This states that schools must provide "free and appropriate public education" to all students regardless of disabilities.
  • Mills v. Board of Education

    Mills v. Board of Education
    Mills v. the Board of Education of the District of Columbia mandated among other stipulations that students with disabilities have the right to due process before being subject to any changes from regular public school classes.

    504
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 provides for accommodations and access for people with disabilities in Federally supported agencies and programs.

    Education for all Handicapped Children Act
    PL 94-142 made it mandatory for public schools (those that receive federal funds) to provide access for students with disabilities.
