On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court ruled to remove all constitutional sanctions regarding segregation by race, and made equal opportunity in education for everyone. This change made it possible for other changes in desegregated housing, public accommodation and institutions of higher education. -
Signed by President Lyndon B Johnson and created by the U.S department of Education. This law provides funding to schools and to the district. It helps provide free and reduced lunch programs for low-income families. The law also created more jobs for teachers, more resources and materials for students in low-income areas. -

Both sexual harassment and sexual violence are prohibited in schools including unfair treatment or behaviors to an individual based on their gender. Schools that accepts federal funds are required to provide equal access to education and a daily free meal for children with physical and mental disabilities. Schools are also required to provide the appropriate educational assistance for all children with disabilities between ages 3 and 21. An inclusive program for children with special needs that has curriculum modification and program options for the students with components defined as the Least Restrictive Environment and IEP for the child. -
An IEP provides students with a learning disability or physical disability with an equal learning opportunity as every student. An IEP is reviewed once a year and is developed by a team of qualified staff members. Staff and parents reviews the assessment provided and creates an educational program that meets the child's educational needs based on their disability. -
Legalized state requirements for assistive technology to be used to help improve a child with disability in an educational environment. Funding is provided by the Unites State Department of Education to support these technology devices to children with disabilities. Some assistive technology examples are: voice amplification systems, speech generating devices and communication boards. -
IDEA ensures that all students are given a chance to learn in a least restrictive environment. Students are provided a free appropriate public education, special education, and related services to eligible children with disabilities. Under Part C, Early Intervention services are provided to children with disabilities from birth to the age of 2. Created to help students improve their achievement. NCLB Act is a federal law, which provides money for extra educational assistance for low-level students to improve in their academic development. Each states receives money and must test their students to see their level of progress. The assessment are developed in basic skills and given to all students at select grade levels. -
ESS Act is federal law that covers students in public schools grades K-12 general education. Public schools are accountable for the way students learn and succeed and provided all students with an equal opportunity including, students with special education. The act also includes ways to help prevent bullying in schools.
