  • First American School for Deaf

    First American School for Deaf
    Gallaudet opened the first U.S. deaf school "Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons" in Hartford, Connecticut. The school changed the way the general population viewed and interacted with deaf and hard of hearing persons.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    By declaring that all persons born here in the US are citizens, this act sates that it was illegal to discriminate against individuals on the basis of color, race or whether they were a slave. This in turn would help the future provide remedy for those effected in the education system. This was also the earliest act on record in regards to education.
  • First Black Medical College

    First Black Medical College
    Meharry is a historically black medical school located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1876, and originally names "Medical Department of Central Tennessee College" it was the first medical school for African Americans in the South.It was founded 11 years after the end of the Civil War, with the mission of educating African Americans in the medical sector.
  • NAACP

    NAACP
    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was created in 1909 by an interracial group consisting of W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, Mary White Ovington, and others. This organization pushed for the abolition of segregation and discrimination in housing, education, employment, voting, and transportation; to oppose racism; and to ensure African Americans their constitutional rights. The NAAP is still active and is currently at work with removing the confederate flag.
  • Brown v.Board of Education

    Brown v.Board of Education
    One of the most famous legislative acts that was the stepping stone to stop segregation in schools amongst black ands whites. Separate but equal act was eventually abolished.
  • Special Olympics

    Special Olympics
    Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities, providing year-round training and activities to 5 million participants and Unified Sports partners in 172 countries.
    I am also proud to say I took part in special olympics as a judge during high school.
  • Lau v. Nichols

    Lau v. Nichols
    The most important court decision regarding the education of language-minority students. This case was brought forward by Chinese American students who were placed in mainstream classrooms despite their lack of proficiency in English, and left to figure it out.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    The individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), was first enacted in 1975 and most recently revised in 2004. It mandates that each state provide all eligible children with a public education that meets their individual needs. Also specifies that children with various disabilities, including autism, are entitled to early intervention services and special education.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The act was the product of a collaboration between civil rights and business groups, as well as both Democrats and Republicans. Also, this act improved the quality of special education programs at the state level by requiring assessments and highly qualified, specially trained professionals to teach students with disabilities. In turn, emphasizing the federal role in holding schools accountable for student outcomes.

  • First Certified Autism Center theme park

    First Certified Autism Center theme park
    Sesame Place Sesame Place becomes the first theme park in the world to be designated as a Certified Autism Center(CAC) Parent company, Sea World, has specially trained staff on: sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness. This event has led other companies to follow suit. Peppa Pig world will be opening in February 2022 with same CAC accreditation.
