American Sch. of the Deaf
The American School of the Deaf was the first school to open for the deaf in the United States and the first school to open overall for students with disabilities. This school was previously called "The Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb." The American School of the Deaf was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc and served its purpose to overcome universal literacy in attempts to teach deaf people. -
Brown v. Board Education
Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case in 1954 ended the racial segregation in American public schools. The segregation that was happening in public schools was a violation of the 14th Amendment. As a result, it was considered unlawful. The Supreme Court case brought to light that separating is not the answer to equal opportunity to those of different gender, races, and disabilities. This put an end to the "separate but equal." -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act provided funding for public and private education. After the act was passed for a year they began to require funds for the students with disabilities. This Act supported low-income families access high quality education programs. As well as, free and reduced lunches and additional teachers in the needy communities. -
Mills v. Board of Education
The case excluded handicapped children from public schools. The Supreme Court found that denying these students a right to education was the same as discriminating against students for their race or gender. The court then ruled that students with disabilities must be given a public education even if the students are unable to pay for the cost of the education. -
Section 504
This public Law is called Vocational Rehabilitation Act (VRA), this civil rights law forbids discrimination against those with disabilities. This law gives those individuals equal access to education regardless of the severity of their disability. Meaning those individuals can't be denied or excluded from such benefits. -
Education to All
Also known as (PL) 94-142): President Gerald Ford signed the law "Education to All Handicapped Children Act." (EHA) The goal of this Act was to guarantee students with disabilities a free appropriate public education. (FAPE) Assures the right of the children and their parents are always protected. Americans with Disabilities Act
A civil rights law that forbids discrimination toward people with disabilities. This law applies in places such as: Jobs, all public and private places,schools, and transportation. The ADA allows those individuals to get the accomodations needed. -
IDEA
This Act changed its name from EHA (Education to All Handicapped Children Act) to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) in 1990. IDEA guarantees that all children with a disability get the accomodations needed. This Act provides students with a disability the same opportunity as those without one. -
No Child Left Behind
NCLB was signed into law by President George W. Bush. No Child Left Behind Act was put in place to improve the public primary and secondary schools. President George W. Bush's main worry was how the neediest students were being left behind. Which then resulted in a reauthorizing of the ESEA. (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) By doing this, they gave increased accountability for States, school districts, and schools, and greater choice for parents and students. -
Every Student Succeeds
This law replaced the previous law "No Child Left Behind" , this recent Act "Every Student Succeeds" is the main education law in public schools in the U.S. Therefore, making schools accountable for the acheievement and learning of their students.
