The Cuyahoga council was an advocacy group. It was created by 5 mothers whose children had intellectual disabilities. The children of these women were separated from a normal class environment when they moved to Ohio; the mothers decided to protest their children's exclusion from the public school system which lead to the establishment of a special class for their children. -
NARC was formed by 23 advocacy groups who all shared the same belief. The NARC consisted of 200,000 members.The NARC made sure that the parts in the judicial process were met for the good and wellbeing of children with developmental disabilities. -
Court case that went against the Plessy V. Ferguson case. "Separate is not equal; " this case fought for black v. white's in school as well as special needs children v. gen ed students. Brought forth the start of many advocacy groups who brought attention to special needs programs.

This case fought for students with special needs to be placed in publicly funded school settings run by state institutions. Based on proper evaluation, they believed such students should be placed in classrooms accommodating their educational needs. -
Lawsuit filed against the district of Colombia. The court ultimately ruled that students with disabilities must be given a public education even if the students are unable to pay for the cost of the education. This made it unlawful for these individuals to be denied access to these institutions. -
This act allowed for all students with disabilities to be given the right to be educated in public schools. It included free and special education for those ages 3-21. -
Act signed by President George W. Bush promising that all people with special needs shall have the same rights as anyone else. This included both in school and work. Also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against.
