History of South Philly

  • 1638

    The first Swedish immigrants settled in what is now Wilmington, Delaware while most Dutch and English colonists were already here scattered through out the Delaware Valley.

  • 1642

    The second group of Swedes established “New Sweden,” which was a colony that was made up of Swedish (and some Finnish) immigrants who settled down in what is now South Philadelphia.

    The dutch

    The Dutch briefly laid claim to the Weccacoe area shortly before the British came to rule.
  • 1654

    The Swedish and the Lenape signed a Friendship Compact which strengthened the all ready peaceful trade relations.
  • 1677

    The Swedes had the first Christian worship in a log house. They had to sail up the Delaware River every week just to attend church.
  • 1682

    William Penn established Philadelphia by negotiating a treaty with the Lenni Lenape, renaming Weccacoe, calling it Southwark.
  • 1700

    Gloria Dei is the oldest church in Pennsylvania and it was dedicated as a place of worship by the Swedish settlers.
  • 1780

    The Pennsylvania Assembly pased "the act for the gradual abolition of slavery" which established philadelphia as a plave for run awy slaves to be free.

    European Immigration

    Immigrants came from Europe, Germany and Ireland. African American immigration form the south increased.

    The first public schools were establish to educate the poor population a the city's expense. Eight schools in all were formed.
  • 1838

    Pennsylvania Hall was built near the area of 6 and haines to discuss the abolition of slavery. Three days after it was built it was burnt to the ground by anti-abloitionists.

    As a result of a famine many Irish arrived in southwark and kensingtion
  • 1842

    The Lombard Street riots started when 1,000 African Americans attened a sobirety parade to honor the 8th aniversary of the abolition of slavery in the West indies. The Irish mob attacked them on 4th street, robbed a lot of houses and burned the Second African Presbyterian Church on Lombard.

    "The Districts of Southwark, Moyamensing, Passyunk, Kensington, and Northern Liberties were incorporated into city of Philadelphia."-philaplace.org
  • 1871

    The first professional fire department was created and replaced most of the old volunteer companies. When there was a fire companies would fight over it and many buildings burned down.

    1880 - 1910

    Numerous italians started to migrate from Italy. The largest amount was in the neighborhood called Bella Vista aroung zip code 19146. It wasn't until 1910 that immigrants from europe could directly come in to Philadelphia. Before they would come in through New York and take a train the Philadelphia.

    Over 300 homes were demolished and serval hundreds of families were relocated during the construction of Interstate-95.
  • 1959

    I-95 consturction was apporved and started.
