    In 1853 New York, The Childrens Aid Society began serving meals to the students that attended the vocational school. This was important because it recognized the importance of nutrition in association with a child's learning.

    In 1894 Philadelphia, the Starr Center Association began serving penny lunches at one school, which eventually grew to nine schools. This was important because it was the beginning of a concerted effort to provide food in school.

    This was important because in order for school food programs to thrive, the government needed to make an effort to spread it.
