History of Plastic

  • The First Man Made Plastic

    The First Man Made Plastic
The day and month is not the actual day and month. The year is correct though. On this day Alexander Parkes introduced the first man made plastic at the 1862 Great International Exhibition. The exhibtition was in London. It introduced the world to the product that would soon be important in their lives.
  • Won a Bronze Medel

Again the day and month is not the correct day and month. Alexander Parkes won a medal at the World's Fair in London in 1862 for his invention of plastic.
  • The Long Awaited PVC!

    The Long Awaited PVC!
This type of plastic was invented by a German Chemist named Eugen Baumann. The inventor never applied for a patent. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was patented in 1913 after Friedrich Klatte invented a new method of polyvinyl chloride using sunlight.
  • The Synthetic Man Made Plastic is Made!

The Synthetic Man Made Plastic is Made!
(Day and month are not correct.) This type of plastic was called Bakelite. It was made from a resin that is from coal tar. Bakelite couldn't melt unlike past plastics. Bakelite was used to make jewelry, clock, and radio cases. (The photo is a early telephone that was made with bakelite.)
  • Cellophane is Invented!

    Cellophane is Invented!
(Day and month not correct.) Cellophane was invented in 1908, but the inventor waited until 1912 to patent it. The sale of cellophane didn't take off until it was made moisturproof. This type of plastic was used to wrap up pieces of sweet and delicious candy.
  • New Plastics Will Be Invented While Old Plastics Will Get Better

Today, out there somewhere, many scientists might be creating new types of plastics and making old plastics even better. I can't wait to learn if there is a new plastic that was invented. Can you?
