    George Washington led two Virginia companies into the great Meadows to try to dislodge the French and their American Indian allies.They were forced to retreat because of rain-filled trenches. It was the western frontier, now western Pennsylvania, that Washington learned the guerrilla ways of American Indian warfare, how to fight the natives on their own terms, how to placate them with rum and gifts, and ultimately how to deafeat them, setting the stage for white settlement.
