The latest election in Peru was this year, 2016. The two candidates were Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Keiko Fujimori. With 97.1% of ballots counted Kuczynski had a lead with 50.1%, where as Fujimori had 49.85% of the vote. Kuczynski lead was approximately 50,000 votes. Mr Kuczynski ran a campaign focused on her controversial father Alberto Fujimori,the former autocratic president is now serving time in prison for crimes against humanity. Kuczynski won and was sworn in on July 28,2016.

Peru celebrates their Independence on July 28 through the 29 of each year.Dawn on July 28 is greeted with a salvo of 21 cannons, to herald the ceremony of raising the flag. On July 29th, before the famous military parade is held in downtown Lima, the Te Deum ceremony, in which the president attends, is celebrated at the Lima Cathedral. In various parts of the country some people throw agricultural and livestock fairs.

A chartered plane carrying a division one Brazillian Soccer Team crashed on the hillside in Colombia. Killing seventy one people and six supposedly survived the horrific crash. Colombian aviation authorities have confirmed that 21 of the 77 of the people aboard the plane are considered dead. They were headed to the South American Cup in Medillen, Columbia.
