  • First School in America

    First School in America
    Boston Latin SchoolMOST IMPORTANT: This was the first founded school in America. It happened in Boston, Mass and was named Boston Latin School. It was founded by John Cotton who was a Puritan minister. People in these days mainly used schools to teach religious things. He wanted this school to teach Latin and Greek while also teaching grammar. This is still impacting us today because we have other schools because of Cotton. He really got things started with the educaiton movemnet and it's still going on today.
  • First laws that were made on behalf of education

    Massachusetts law of 1642 ordered the selectmen of each town to ascertain whether parents and masters (of apprentices) were, in fact, providing for the education of their children. They also had to figure out what was being taught. 5 years later they made a law that told people that if you had 50 people in our town you had to have a teacher to teach all the kids in the town. Education was very important to them and these were the first education laws that were in place.
  • Impact of Rush on school system

    Rush was deeply involved in the education system. He didn’t like the death sentence and alongside Jefferson created the first abolition society in Philadelphia, the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage. He wanted a free school for everyone just like Jefferson did. He wanted to prepare them for college. Rush wanted women and blacks to have education. He thought women should be educated because in order to raise their kids right they first need to be educated.

    The impact of Thomas Jefferson
    A bill for More General Diffusion of KnowledgeMOST IMPORTANT:Jefferson’s bill for the more general diffusion of knowledge was introduced in 1779. Every town of 100 had to have a school for child to go to. Jefferson also opened up The University of Virginia a year before he died creating a large impact on education. He basically lead the way for everyone having free schooling and started a major college.
  • Common schools

    Opening in Boston these were the elementary schools and dame schools. They used common schools to teach writing, reading and math. They learned to read so they could use the bible. They did also have charity schools for those who could not afford schools. Girls and guys could go to school but reading, spelling and needle work was really all girls needed to know.
  • Secondary School Movement

    This is the year that the Movement began to have school that comes after elementary school. The first school was renamed the Boston English High School a few years a later. The first one was for boys and did so well they started pushing for girls to have it as well.

    Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th century

    Between 1830 and 1860 the population went from 13 million to 32 million. 4 million came from immigration. They had some from England that shared the same thoughts and language but soon they started getting people who didn’t speak English and did all the labor for the people. The United States had started to become very urban. There were many cities and lots of mills and work. This would change the education system a lot because now you have kids that don't know English and are different.

    West High School MOST IMPORTANT: The creation of the high school really got the ball rolling for all school to take place. This meant that students could have somewhere to go after elementary school and that they could have education for longer. This creation still impacts schools today because without high school we can't do many things. People need high school to live life in America now.
  • Committee of Ten

    The Committe of Ten wanted to make sure students were learning the uniform subject matter and instruction for both college-bound and terminal students, with few electives. They didn't really want the students to learn something important they could use. This plays a major role in education because it is important to learn life skills and things we will use later in life.
  • Growth of Standardized Testing

    The Growth of Standardized testing is impactful to the education system because it has really changed the way kids learn. Kids now have to learn based around a test they will take some day. Teachers have to teach different as well. Who knows if tests are really helping or if they are making learning harder for kids? 1926 is when the first ACT test was.
  • Impact of World War II

    The War had a large impact on what happened to the education system. Students and teachers had to leave the schools to enlist in the war and also to work. They were low on money for the schools as well. Half the students in college had dropped out after the war. It greatly impacted the school system.
  • The Impact of the Civil Rights Movement

    The Brown Vs. The Board sort of started the Civil Rights Movement. This changed things like them teaching kids of all color, being able to teach different languauges. They got funded to provide education for all kids. It really changed the education system for the better so that everyone was able to get the same thing.

    Brown Vs. Board MOST IMPORTANT: In 1945 the Supreme Court made a ruling that said whites and blacks can no longer be seperated during school. They could share a school together and learn together. This has greatly impacted the education system because now no one is different and this was a step in the right direction for everyone in the United States. Showed that we are all equal.
  • Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, 1975

    Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, 1975
    IDEAMOST IMPORTANT: This Act really changed the education system. Before this happened if you were handicapped in anyway you were unable to get an education. Now with this act you can and the school has to help provide a way for you. This is so important to education just like when the blacks were able to get schooling now everyone can get it. They can no longer turn away anyone because something is different about them.
  • No Child Left Behind

    This was a law passed by George Bush that talks all about what students should know by a certain time. It talks about what everyone should learn about math and reading and that they should be tested biannually. This impacted the education system a lot because now teachers must follow this and look towards this while teaching.
