    Charles Wedemeyer obtained a grant from the Carnegie Foundation to fund AIM at the University of Wisconsin. Wedemeyer applied the principles on which modern manufacturing industry was founded to the teaching of adult learners at a distance which made it possible to deliver courses of higher quality and lower cost at a distance.

    The Open University
    The British government set up an independent, large-scale system dedicated entirely to distance education-The Open University. The OU demonstrated that distance was no barrier to the delivery of education this is of very high quality, with an annual enrollment of 100,000 adult students and 20,000 baccalaureate graduates each year.

    Empire State College was created within the State University of New York to deliver programs at a distance.

    National University Teleconference Network
    The National University Teleconference Network was an important vehicle for collaboration in videoconferencing. The network grew to 250 organizations and provided programs to as many as 6,000 people at a time, at 200 receiving sites.
