    On January 1, 1638 Swedish and Finnish colonists from the ships Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip built a timber and earth fort along the Christina River which is now Seventh Street Peninsula in Wilmington Delaware. Settlers named the fort after the 12 year-old queen of Sweden. It was the first Swedish settlement in America.

    King Charles ll handed over a piece of his land holdings to WIlliam Penn to satisfy a debt the king owed to Penn's father. This land included present day Delaware. Penn imediately set sail to Delaware and set foot on Delaware soil at New Castle. Penn took over this piece of land on January 1 1682.
