    From the beginning..............
    When one thinks of document management, most may only go back to the early 1940’s. . But in reality, human beings from the beginning of time have always communicated and left documentation behind. With communication came in the forms of carvings and paintings, saving “their work” for thousands of years. Then came tally sticks, papyrus, and the creation of paper. The earliest printed book dates back to 868 AD.

    The first printing press was created in 1450 by a German goldsmith, making it possible to rapidly produce a large amounts of text. With the came the ability to store and exchange information.
    Around 1725 punch cards came into existence and was used to help reproduce patterns on cloth.

    in 1890, The US Census Bureau even used punch cards. by 1928, punch card were a standard size, and were being used for a variety of purposes.
  • 1932-1956

    1932-1956
    Digital Storage came into existence. Random access storage units to the first hard drive platter, commercially used tape drives were developed. In 1956, the first modern hard drive was created and it spun at 1200 rpm.
  • 1966-1980

    1966-1980
    This is the time most of us have learned about the major changes taking place in the world of computing. It is now becoming accessible on a personal level. Floppy disks were quite large when they were first developed. We were also starting to use cassette tapes for recording audio. CD's were replacing the floppy disk.
  • 1987-1994

    1987-1994
    During this time is when the capacity of storing information grew exponentially. Cd's were still widely used due to low price, surviving the introduction of the zip drive. We are now moving to the digital age of saving images and photographs.
  • 1995-2004

    1995-2004
    The world of technology is on fire. Computing, television, multi-media are in very home, school, office, and business. We are in panic mode when something goes awry. People carry their "lives" around their necks on memory sticks. Digital cameras can hold thousand of photos.

    We are now saving items in the Cloud. Amelia Bedelia would say, "I look up in the sky every day and do not see any papers flying around. So, I do not understand why people say they are saving things in the cloud". What will come next??
