    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - In upper class families(1) they wanted a son to carry on the family name and wealth. However, lower class families(2) needed children for labour. Overall, both classes had multiple children to ensure their survival.
    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    1. Children were sent away until they were mature enough to join the adult world, Spent most of infancy with a hired woman, serving little purpose in parents lives.
    2. Children were integrated into social and working world at a young age.

    First Nations Families
    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - For labour: Older boys and men would hunt, trade, and engage in warfare away from village. While woman, girls, and younger children were in charge of growth and gathering of food.
    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    - Mother, daughter relationships were very strong resulting in women and children having a higher status within the family and community.

    Expanding Families of European Immigrants
    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - In middle and upper class families(1) children are to continue the family name, traditions, and wealth. However, in farming and peasant families(2) it is to provide enough labour to run the farm.

    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    1. Boys attended school.
    2. Girls were more likely to acquire basic literacy skills so they could perform household tasks and raise siblings.

  • Chinese Families

    Chinese Families
    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - Children are raised to find good – jobs, be financially successful, and attend the best college/university.
    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    - Men are more superior, resulting in women feeling less valued.
    - The pressure to succeed in school because the pressure to fail is too high. Resulting in suicide being the leading cause of death in China through individuals ages 20-35.

    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - Happy if child at birth is male, due to the fact that he can carry on the family name have a wife to keep up with household chores.
    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    - Men/boys are more valued and at able to obtain an education.
    - Women/girls are not valued, only needed to learn and fulfill wife duties.

    PURPOSE OF CHILDREN:
    - To have a better life than parents; upward mobility of children would bring family wealth and status.
    TREATMENT OF CHILDREN:
    - Expected to work hard and do well in school to improve their future standard of living.
    - Live with parents until married because marriage leads to gifts, which can then help the new couple establish themselves and their future family.
