  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    Section 504 includes individuals with medical conditions outside the 13 qualifying categories of Special Education. Students with who have a 504 plan are eligibile to be considered for Assitive Technology increasing educational oppotunities. From this act, some elevators, ramps, bathroom designs, Braille labels, and curb cuts arose.
  • Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1988

    Assitive technolgoy as a term was first introduced. This act gave funding to to every state in order to provide assitive technology devices and services to people with disabilities.
  • Americans with Disability Act of 1990

    Assitive Technology was listed under auxiliary aids and services so typically only individuals with a severe disability had access to Assitive Techonology. Civil rights were gave people with disabilities access to transportation, employment, government services and telecommunications.
  • IDEA 1997

    With the passing of IDEA 1997, every student in special education is considered for the appropriatness of Assistive Technology. If deemed appropriate by the team, guaranteed access was granted. The team took into consideration the SETT framework to deem the appropriateness of AT. Student, Environment, Task, Tools.
  • IDEA 2004

    IDEA 2004 excluded surgically implanted medical devices as Assistive Technology.
