  • Distance Learning Degrees Formalized

    Distance Learning Degrees Formalized
In 1858 the University of London becomes the first university to offer distance learning degrees.
  • Project-Based Learning

    Project-Based Learning
John Dewey lays the foundation for what would become project based learning. The idea of PBL is that learners gain more knowledge from their own active exploration of problems.
  • Blooms Taxonomy

    Blooms Taxonomy
Benjamin Bloom develops a framework for educational goals that is later coined as Blooms Taxonomy. It categorizes levels of understanding and knowledge.

  • Adult Learning Theory

    Adult Learning Theory
Malcolm Knowles establishes four assumptions about adult learners. These were different from the ideas of pedagogy and later included a fifth assumption.
  • Theory Multiple Intelligences

    Theory Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner proposes the theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner suggests there are different types of intelligences possessed by learners. This is sometimes conflated with the idea of multiple learning styles, which has been refuted.
  • Experiential Learning Theory

    Experiential Learning Theory
David Kolb publishes his model for experiential learning theory. There are four stages:

Kolb argued that using this model produces effective learning and that learners may enter the cycle at any time.
