History of AMS

  • Nancy Rambusch travels to Paris to the 10th International Montessori Congress

  • Rambusch moves to Connecticut

  • Whitby School opens in the outsides of Greenwich, CT. Rambusch is selected as head of school. Whitby is the first Montessori school to open in the U.S.

  • Mario Montessori appoints Rambusch to serve as the U.S representative of the A.M.I

  • AMS is founded by Rambusch

  • First Whitby Campus was established

  • Time magazine features Rambusch and the Whitby Schoo. American Montessori is revived.

  • Rambusch book “Learning How to Learn.” Is published

  • AMI withdrew its recognition of AMS as a Montessori society. From that point on AMS has existed independently from AMI

  • Rambusch resigns as president of AMS

  • The National office of AMS moves from Greenwich, CT to NY

  • First teacher training program starts

  • First International Symposium held in Athens

  • AMS launches NCMPS ( National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector)

  • AMS and AMI/U.S.A. form MPPI

  • Online Onboard- debuted including : AMS connect, New AMS website and Facebook live

  • Montessori Event, Washington, D.C., second largest conference in AMS history

  • AMS: 14813 individual members, 96 affiliated teacher education programs, 1461 school members, and 210 AMS Accredited schools

  • New School Accreditation Handbook is made by AMS

  • AMS: 16,000 members, 70 countries with AMS members and 215 accredited schools.
