- Provoked because of the book The Jungle, revealed unsafe and unsanitary working condiitons
- Called for truth in labeling and halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines
- Also called for cleanliness requirements for meatpackers
- I think this was important because it made a lot more food edible and prevented numerous food poisonings and diseases
