William Seward set up an meeting for the u.s to buy alaska from the russians. it costs about 7.2 million dollars. it was about 2 cents an acre. It was important because alaska was rich in timber, minerals, and oil. -
U.S takes Hawaii
in the same year as alaska was purchased, hawaii was also bought. It was important because it had a lot of sugar crops. american farmers harvested sugar. This made hawwiian sugar production to go up nine times. they called for the U.S to annex islands so they wouldnt have to pay the duty. -

President mckinley had ordered the ship to cuba to bring home american citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect american property. It then exploded in the harbor of havana. more than 260 men were killed. It was important because it was what started the Spanish- american war even though no one really knows who blew the ship up. -

it was a volunteer cavalry that was led by leonard wood and theodore roosevelt. the famous land battle in cuba took plave near santiago. the rough riders and and two african regiment charged uphill nearby kettle hill. this was important because if not for the rough riders, the african american regiments would have been fighting by themselves. -

Boxer rebillions were a chinese secret society that pledged to rid the country of the europeans. the boxers killed hundreds of missionaries and other foreigners. they also killed chinese people that tried to turn to christianity. this was important because americans put down this rebellion. thousands of chinese people died. if not for the americans, lots of europeans would have died. -

He was a hero in Cuba during the Spanish- American war. When he arrived a hero when he came back to new york. He was soon elected governor of New york. he dominated the news with his many exploits. I think he was important because he helped create a modern presidency. he had leadership and he never gave up. -

New weopens would change the nature of warfare. the two most innovative weapons were the tank and the airplane. they had machine guns, antiaircraft gun, poinson gas, and tanks. It was important because it was much more easier than just firing a machine gun mounted on your airplane than just opening your airplane and shooting the other planes with your pistol. -

It was where heavy gaurd of destroyers escorted merchant ships back and forth across the Atlantic in groups. it was important because ships would be much more safe shipping items with bigger ships surrounding them. The ship loss had been cut in half. -

the british blockade was a blockade system that prevented the german coast from weopons and other military supplies from getting through. It was important because it caused germans to starve to death. the americans were angered because it threatened freedom of the seas and trade with the germans. -
raising an army
At one point of the war americans didnt have enough men for the war. so congress passed the selective service act. it required all men to register with the government in order to be randomly selected for military service. it was important because in 1918 they had about 24 million men registered under the act. about 3 million men were called up for war.
