    Square Toe Shoes
    During the Renaissance period fashion shifted from the vertical lines of the Gothic style to an emphasis on the horizontal. This can be best seen in the exaggerated broad squared toe shape. The toe shape became the signifier of wealth and power. Slashed leather decoration allowed the colours of the stocking underneath to show through.

  • Chopines

    Chopines
    In 1600 the chopines were invented, these were backless shoes or slippers with high platform soles. They became very popular throughout Renaissance Europe. They were worn with nobility in Italy and Spain.

    These tiny shoes were probably made as show piece samples for potential customers or possibly as test pieces by aspiring apprentices, also they were made in the revolutionary era. Only ten centimetres long and nine high, they were easier to transport than a full size shoe. This practice of making miniatures was typical of all craftspeople at the time.

  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 consisted of five laws passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery. When California wanted to enter the union as a free state, it would ruin the free and slave state balance. Henry Clay introduced many resolutions on January 29, 1850 to help prevent tension between North and South, he abolished the Fugitive Slave Act and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., also an act was passed to settle a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico.
