  • The Battle of Chancellorville

    The Battle of Chancellorville
The main part of the battle of Chancellorville lasted from May 1st to 4th. The South/Confederates won that battle and is considered to be Robert E. Lee's greatest victory for the South as a general. The battle took place in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. This battle lifted the spirits of the Confederate army for the Union lost about 5,000 more soldiers than the Confederacy. This provided an amount of hope for the Confederates to keep on with the war.
  • The Battle of Chickamauga

    The Battle of Chickamauga
The Battle of Chickamauga took place in northwest Georgia on September 19-20, 1863. The Confederate's commander at the time was Braxton Bragg, and he was determined to take back Chickamauga. The Union's commander William Rosecrans was defeated because of an opening in his line. Bragg took advantage of this and pushed the Union back. This resulted in a Confederate victory. The Union suffered 16,000 casualties while the Confederacy suffered 18,000.
  • The Battle of The Wilderness

    The Battle of The Wilderness
The battle of the Wilderness took place in Northern Virginia from May 5th to 7th, 1864. The North/Union won with the lead of their general Ulysses S. Grant after many casualties. The Union suffered around 17,000 casualties of their 101,000 men. The Confederacy suffered around 7,000 casualties of their 61,000 men. After a long battle the Union eventually pushed the Confederacy back to their defenses at Richmond.
  • The Battle of Spotsylvania

    The Battle of Spotsylvania
The Battle of Spotsylvania took place around the same place as Chancellorville and Willderness, in Virginia May 8-19, 1864. In the end there was no clear winner to this battle but the Union did suffer more casualties. Ulysses S. Grant would not give in to the Confederacy and kept pushing despite the casualties. The Union suffered around 18,000 while the Confederates suffered 9,000. The best explanation for the Union losing twice as many casualties is their larger amount of soldiers.
