  • AIDS

    Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, also known as AIDS, was a disease that mostly affected gay men in the 1980s. The first reported cases were in June of 1981.
  • MTV

    Since the 50s, television had become increasingly popular. On August 1, 1981 MTV, a television channel, was created. MTV expressed the culture of the 80s and featured icons of the time and displayed the less conservative views of that time.
  • 1982 Recession

    A huge recession hit in 1982. Government spending and borrowing rose and unemployment spiked. America's economy suffered greatly.
  • Boland Amendment

    1982-1984 brought the Boland Amendment which prohibited America from aiding the Contras.
  • Berlin Wall

    On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall was finally torn down after a speech from President Raegan calling for action.
  • The Clintons

    On January 20, 1993 Bill Clinton entered the presidency. Bill and his wife Hillary had been active in politics for many years and brought very liberal viewpoints to the White House.
  • 9/11

    On September 11, 2001 a plane crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. Countless died from the plane crash due to a terrorist attack. This crash devastated the nation.
  • War on Terrorism

    After the horrible event of 9/11, President Bush stated in an address to Congress on September 16, 2001 that America was entering a "war on terrorism".
