The American Disabilities Act

  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was in acted in 1973. This Act stated that no one shall be discriminated against that has a disability from a place that is apart of the federal government or is recieving federal funds.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 helped, but it did not cover all those that have disabilities. So in 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act of ADA was in acted. This is a civil rights act that protects everyone with a disability whether they are applying for a job or a student in school.
  • Why

The ADA came about when people with disabilities started to make complaints about the mistreatment they received while trying to get a job, or even students at grade schools and colleges were having trouble keeping up, because of their limitations and how schools would not provide the necessary accommodations to help them succeed .
  • Impact on Higher Education

With the ADA in affect if forced colleges and universities to make drastic changes to their campuses, by providing ramps for those that are not able to take the stairs. Now they even have departments made just for the students with disabilities. Students now can have an interpreter with them in class if they are hearing impaired.
  • Future

The ADA is an act that benifets all students that go not only to a public higher education institution, but private ones as well. The ADA is constatly being updated to help all people with disabilties and I believe that it will one day cover those in the LGBTQ community as well.
