    Nomadic Life

    Women and men often moved to find more food, where men were hunters and women were gatherers. These roles helped to make men and women more equal. Many became farmers which led to a rise in agrarian lifestyle, which meant more stability. It is thought that women in this time period became sowers and collectors of seeds.

    Ancient Egypt

    Women in this time period adorned their bodies and clothing. Jewelry and make up were also common during this time period. Henna tattoos were often seen on the hands of women, and their nipple and breast veins were enhanced. They also wore wigs. Nefertiti was a beautiful woman who was married to the pharaoh and created a monotheistic religion where you only worshipped the sun, however not many people were on board.

    Ancient Rome

    In Ancient Rome, women were considered citizens, however they were not allowed to vote or hold office. Women were put in arranged marriages, but divorce was common and easy. It was known that if a woman had bore three lives, she was able to be seen as an independent. They were allowed to attend public baths and games, and own/run a business. An important woman in this time period was Octavia the Younger.

    Ancient Christianity

    In this time period, it was more common for women to be christians than men. Women were seen as "co-workers." At this time, life was centered around the home, which meant women were seen as having a leadership role. Some women were even financial brokers. Many women were martyred, like Lucia of Syracuse.
  • Period: 500 to 1400

    Middle (Dark) Ages

    During the middle ages, women were often undergoing backbreaking work, causing them to die in large numbers. It was common for women to die of anemia due to an incomplete diet and rudimentary medical care. Other factors of this time period are feudalism and black death. An important women in this time period was Empress Theodora who was apart of the lower class and become a prostitute and actress, and was also the emperor's mistress.

    European Renaissance

    The women of this time period were denied all political rights and considered legally subject to their husbands. Women were supposed to be and only seen as housewives. Peasant women worked in the field alongside their husbands and ran the home.

    18th Century

    A woman in the 1800s most likely felt trapped in their own life, in the home. They were to only perform domestic duties. Women were seen as having no control of their lives. Mostly everything was controlled by the men in the society.

    19th Century

    Many women in the middle class during this time period began working outside of the home. There were also more laws made to help protect women and children while working, like the law banned women and boys under 10 from working underground. Elizabeth Blackwell is an important woman during this time period because she's the first woman to receive a medical degree.

    20th Century

    Women in this time period are seen as having "equal" rights as men, such as voting, however with that comes sexism. As the 20th century went on, women had more freedom in marriages, divorces, clothing and jewelry. An important woman during this time period was Audrey Hepburn, who was known for being a fashion and film icon.

    Present Day

    Women in today's society are given a voice in politics and have well paying jobs, many higher than men. Women are often seen in feminist movements and popular movements like the "Me Too" organization. Sexism is still around and is commonly seen in wage gaps. An important woman in today's society is Zendaya, who is involved in just about every movement possible and offers a very positive energy.
