Imre Lakatos had a very interesting life before he really contributed to science. In 1956 is when he first crossed the boarders to London and befriended Karl Popper. Even though he worked under Popper he had different views of science, he concluded that Popper didn’t take mathematics into account while researching theories. This led to him writing four articles on how mathematics is inter twined with philosophy of science.

Imre Lakatos published 4 articles in 1976 called Proofs and Refutations (which is a play off Karl Poppers book). In these articles he talks about Karl Popper’s views of philosophy but he also talks about how mathematics is actually involved in science more than what Popper portrays in any of his work. Lakotas believes that math can be correct from the start even if the problem needs to be refined.

Lakatos almost came out while a published work called “Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes”. He disagreed with Thomas Kuhn on how you can only have one paradigm shift at a time. Lakatos believed that you can have multiple different theories happening at once and if you do happen to disprove one it doesn’t mean that all the research leading up the that theory is wrong and should be discredited which is what Popper and Kuhn believed.

Lakatos believes in two components with his theory of programmes; hard core and protective belt/auxiliary hypotheses. Hard core means the ideas or theories that make up one problem are not absolute but they are the main idea. The protective belt/auxiliary hypotheses are ideas that make up the hard core theory. The protective belt should be the part that changes while you are evolving the theory not the hard core. He also believed that even if a certain theory is struggling don’t give up on it!
