Bonnie Nettles was a nurse for Marshall Applewhite and she told him that their meeting was planned by the aliens convincing him of their existence and that they had a mission for him. -
Oregon to Colorado
Nettles and Applewhite decided to move their 20 followers from Oregon, leaving everything behind, to Colorado because that is where they believed the spacecraft would pick them up. -

Applewhite Moved to Santa Fe
Applewhite resurfaced the cult and started to recruit again in the 90s. In 1995 the Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered and the cult believed the spacecraft was hiding behind it. Then in 1996 he decided to move the cult to a rented property in Santa Fe because that is where the comet would be closest to the Earth and the "easiest to access". -
Cult Members Kill Themselves
The comet Hale-Bopp's 4,000 year orbit around the sun, and while it was finally the closest to the Earth it would be, Applewhite along with 38 other followers drank phenobarbital with pudding or applesauce that was followed up by vodka, hoping to leave their bodily containers and join the aliens on that craft.
