    Great Migration to the North
    Many in the Harlem Renaissance were part of the Great Migration out of the South into the Negro neighborhoods of the North and Midwest. African Americans sought a better standard of living and relief from racism in the South. Others were people of African descent from communities in the Caribbean who came to the United States hoping for a better life. The Great Migration brought hundreds of thousands of African Americans to cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and New York.

    Harlem Renaissance

    The first stage of the Harlem Renaissance started in the late 1910s. Many African Americans were united in their love for music, art, theater, and literature. This time period is marked with many great contributions to the arts from the African American community. Harlem was at the heart of this rebirth of the arts. Jazz music was introduced and made famous by musicians like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Literature was also embraced by now famous jazz poets like Langston Hughes.
