Darwin graduated from Cambridge in 1830 with honor. Although he took great interest in the natural world, Darwin was originally planning on living his life within the clergy. Prior to his preparations for that life he had made plans to leave for the Islands off the coast of Portugal. His father had nearly kept Darwin from taking place on his planned trip but was deterred by one of their relatives.

While Darwin was not the first to believe in natural selection, he brought it to the forefront with the facts to back it up. He continued to publish and do scientific work for the remainder of his life and produced addition works to support and branch off his ideals, "The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex" in 1871, "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" in 1872, and "The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species" in 1875.
