    Haitan Revolution

    After the French revolution in 1789, Haiti had it's own.
    The Haitian revolution was a massive and successful slave uprising which ended Slavery and released the island from French control.

    Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806)

    The first new leader of Haiti was Dessalines. His short reign faced the troubles of reestablising it's agriculture (seeing as there weren't any slaves who'd do it.), and the fear of the French. He went so far as to massacre the island's French population and only spared a few. On the 8th of October he made himself the first emperor of Haiti. His reign ended when he was assassinated.

    Haiti was split in two

    After the death of Dessalines Haiti was thrown into the hands of two leaders: Henry Christophe and Alexander Petion. Christophe ruled over the Northern State of Haiti and Petion ruled over the southern Republic of Haiti.
  • Agreement with France

    In exchange for payments to compensate for the french massacres France agreed to recognize Haiti's independence. Haiti was already economically weak so it was forced to ask for loans to pay the French.

    US Occupation of Haiti

    After the brutal murder of president Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam, American president Woodrow Wilson sent out troops to Port-au-Prince. America felt threatened that they'd lose a valuable trade partner so they decided to act directly.
  • Parsley Massacre

    General Trujillo ordered for Haitians living on the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti to be murdered.

    Duvalier Becomes President

    Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier's presidency marks the beginning of a frightening period in Haitian history. He caused the murder of exiling of tens of thousands of civilians. He was president-for-life until he died on April 21 1971. His son "Baby Doc" Duvalier was his successor.

    Jean-Claude Duvalier Becomes President-for-life

    After his father's death, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier at age 19 becomes president-for-life. His reign was quite similar his father's, equally if not more brutal. Although he held office longer thanks to US support, he was forced to flee to France.
  • 2010 Earthquake

    In 2010 a famously devastating earthquake left Haiti in shambles. The struggle to rebuild has been impaired by financial instability and debt. 3 million citizen have been affected and the death toll is in the hundred thousands.
