This law was passed after a White House press secretary was murdered. It made it required that background checks be completed before a gun is purchased from a licensed dealer, manufacturer or importer. It established the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

In 1994, an assault weapons ban was put in place. The 10-year ban was passed by the US Congress on September 13, 1994, following a 52–48 vote in the US Senate, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on the same day. The ban applied only to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment. It expired on September 13, 2004.

This amendment prohibited gun stores from publicly releasing data showing where criminals purchased guns and said that only police officers or prosecutors could access such information.

In 2005, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act was signed by President George W. Bush to stop gun manufacturers from being sued by people who were victims of gun violence.
