  • Britain and the U.S agree to divide Oregon on the 49th parallel

  • American naval forces arrived to occupy the ports of San Francisco and San Diego and to claim the republic for the U.S.

  • Rep. David Wilmot (Democrat from Pennsylvania) proposed that any territory the U.S got from Mexico would be free from slavery and involuntary servitude .

  • Scotts forces captured Mexico's capital after 6 months, in September

  • Mexico's leaders signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

    Mexico gave the U.S more than 500,000 square miles of territory- which is what California, Nevada, Utah and some parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Mexico accepted the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas. In return, the U.S payed Mexico $15 million and took their debt of $3.25 million ($18.25 million in total)
    With Oregon and the former Mexican territories under the American Flag, the dream of Manifest Destiny had been realized.
