  • California Gold Rush

    California Gold Rush
    In 1848 gold was discovered in California. This led lots of people to go there in search of gold to gain a fortune. This made America grow economically and was very beneficial for California. It brought tons of people to that area, where they could begin creating urban centers, agriculture, industry, and intellectual cultural life. It even helped create a railroad. This put California on a fast track for US statehood.
  • Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851

    Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851
    This treaty defined boundaries between Indian Tribes of Northern Great Plains. Tribes that signed this treaty agreed to allow travelers, railroad surveyors, and construction workers to enter the lands safely, allow the government to establish posts and roads, pay for any wrongdoing of their people, and cease fighting with other tribes. The US had to protect Indians from US citizens and deliver annuities if the terms of the treaty were upheld. Because of communication issues, this treaty failed.
  • Fort Atkinson Treaty

    Fort Atkinson Treaty
    This treaty was signed to keep the Americans out of Native American land. Though the treaty was in place, Americans still passed through anyway. This was mainly happening because of the Gold rush. Native Americans attacked white settlers who came onto their land, making the relationship between Americans and the Native Americans poor.
  • Comstock Lode

    Comstock Lode
    Was the first major silver discovery in the United States. Encountered “the blue mud". This sparked a huge silver rush of prospectors fighting to stake a claim. Mining there was very dangerous. In addition to cave-ins and fires, miners had to be on guard against underground flooding, steam and scalding water. George Hearst was one of the first men on site at the Comstock Lode. Nevada is commonly known as the “Silver State,” primarily because of the Comstock Lode
  • Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868

    Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868
    After the treaty in 1851 didn't work, this treaty was created to establish the Great Sioux Reservation which included the Black Hills in the Dakota Territory. Annuities of food and clothing were to be delivered to Indians on the reservation from the US. This had to be signed by 75% of the people. This treaty did not continue, as the US stopped giving its payments.
