    TAGGING

    In the late 1960´s people started writing their names in the subway, on doors and in other public places. Soon their names could be seen all over New York. This is called "tagging." A writer known as "TAKI 183" even made it to New York Times and became famous.

    In 1971 the writers started using spraycans and making throw ups. A throw up is a simple piece with bubble letters and is often made by two different colors.

    WAR ON GRAFITTI
    In 1972 the mayor of New York City, John Lindsay, declared war on grafitti. The authorites made an major effort to clean the city. This was known as "the buf." The laws against grafitti also became tougher.

    HARD TIMES

    From 1980 to 1985 it was a very tough time for writers. The authorities had made a big effort to clean the city. Also the laws had been tougher. Crews got tighter and tougher trying to protect their work.

    SPRAYING GALLERIES

    In an effort to control the writers the authorities opened so called spraying galleries. They were walls on wich it was allowed to paint on. However, the writers found new ways to spread their art. Some made prepainted stickers which they placed on lamp posts and benches. Some even painted on windows with an acis which would etch itself into the glass.
