    Students will line up outside and walk to their new classroom. Hooks will already be prepared with names - encourage students to find their hook, hang up their belongings, change to their indoor running shoes and find the desk with their name on it in the classroom. Take a seat.

    Talk with students about early morning procedures in the classroom - how attendance will be taken, collection of lunch or milk money, where to put their coats, book bags and homework assignments. Walk around the classroom and provide students with a visual tour of where everything is.

    Set up a classroom employment agency for various classroom jobs. Inform students about the assignments necessary to a well-functioning classroom. These can include botanist (waters plants), interior decorator (manages bulletin board), zoologist (cares for class pet), etc. Invite studemts to apply for jobs (using a standard application form) on a set schedule, and rotate the assignments regularly.

    Now come together as a class and discuss what makes a perfect classroom - teacher will record ideas on the board. Once complete reflect on list as a group - make any changes necessary and don't wrap up activity until class agrees on the list of rules and procedures generated. Explain to students that you will take this list and design a good copy for everyone to sign tomorrow.

    Be outside early to meet parents and students who begin arriving. Great everyone with a smile and a welcome and remind everyone that this is going to be a great school year.

    Take time to introduce yourself to the students. Write your name on the board as a visual reminder. Tell students about yourself, your family and your interests. Tell them some interesting things that you did over the summer. Share some funny stories to lighten the mood as students will be nervous. Now provide an opportunity for students to introduce themselves. Give each students a max of 2 min. to talk. Act as facilitator. Make name tag for desks.

    Take time to talk about rules and procedures. Show students a basic set of rules and procedures. Now encourage students to complete a "Perfect Classroom" assignment which will allow them to share their idea of a perfect classroom. Tell students to describe their idea of a great teacher, rules that make for a great classroom and how they can respect their classmates. Provide students with worksheet which outlines these questions for them to complete. Have students share their work.

    Share classroom rules and procedures posters that you designed by using the ideas that the students collaborated on the day prior. Review rules and procedures and what they look like. Make sure students agree and have each student take turns coming up to sign.

    Wrap up the day by thanking students for a fabulous second day of school. Tell students that you have created a "welcome letter" for their parents, which outlines the classroom rules, expectations and key points about our year together. Tell students that the letters must be signed and that within the letter you have included a reminder about Fridays due date for their "What I did over the Summer Break" assignment.

    Take students on a walking tour of the school - gym, bathrooms, library, office - discuss behaviours expected in each location. Walk outside and discuss rules of the playground. Discuss walking single file down the hallways, not talking and correct any undesired behaviours that occur.
