    Led by Alexander Hamilton. Strong national government. Appealed to financial manufacturing and commercial interest. People were rich and well born.
  • Anti- Federalists

    Led by Thomas Jefferson. More sympathetic to the common man. Believed in strict constructionist view of the Constitution. Called Democratic- Republicans or Jeffersonian- Republicans.
  • Democratic Republicans

    Led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
  • Jacksonian Democrats

    Led by Andrew Jackson
  • The Party of Lincoln (Republicans)

    Dominant when Lincoln was President
  • Roosevelt Democrats

    Came about when FDR was elected to the presidency
  • Modern Republicans

    Liberal and open to change. Favor for a minimum wage and progressive taxation. Decreased military spending. Support legality of abortion. Believe in community and that people should be socially responsible.
  • Modern Republicans

    Conservative and adhere to tradition. Taxes shouldn't be increased. Increased military spending. Oppose abortion. Believe in individual rights and justice should rule supreme.
