Goal 2: League of Nations - An organization for international cooperation at the initiative of the victorious Allied Powers at the end of World War I.

  • America enters WWI with there allies: Britain, France, and Russia

Woodrow Wilson was president at the time and he was disturbed by the disasters occurring in the war. The only way to stop these tragedies was to create an international body whose purpose was to maintain peace and would sort out international disputes as they occurred. This would be the task of the League of Nations.
  • Wilson's Fourteen Points

The war was still on and Wilson made up a plan for peace and self determination. He hoped that this plan would help in peaceful negotiations and solutions to world conflicts
  • World War One Ends

WWI ended at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918. Germany signed an agreement for peace to end all fighting.
  • Paris Peace Conference

This peace conference began on this day. The allied powers met to make crucial decisions. Woodrow Wilson struggled to support his idea of a peaceful victory and make sure that Germany was not treated too harshly. Wilson's plan did not work out. Representatives from Germany were excluded from the conference until may and when they did arrive they were presented with a draft for the Versailles Treaty.
  • Versailles Treaty

France and Britain had shown little interest in Wilson's fourteen points. They were both concerned with national security and wanted to strip Germany of its power. The treaty between Germany and the Allied powers was signed exactly five years after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
  • Senate Rejects the League of Nations

The republican leader of the senate Henry Cabot Lodge was suspicious of Wilson and his plan. Article X of the league of nations required the United States to respect the territorial integrity of it member states. Lodge viewed this as limiting the power of the government and sabotaged the league by declaring the US was exempt from Article X. The treaty had failed and the US never joined the League of Nations
  • League of Nations is Formed

The league of nations was formed in Geneva, Switzerland to provide a forum for resolving international disputes.
  • First League of Nations Council Meeting

Composed of 58 member states. Members of the League of Nations were required to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all other nation-states and to disavow the use or threat of military force as a means of resolving international conflicts. The League sought to peacefully resolve territorial disputes between members
  • League of Nations Ends

The League of Nations had failed its main objective of maintaining international peace and was replaced with the United Nations at the end of WWII
