    Born March 17, 1912. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania and his mom had him at a very young age. He attended Wilberforce University and Cheyney State Teacher College which were primarily all black schools. Was apart of the young Communist league in the 1930’s but became delusional and resigned.Fighted civil rights in the 1960’s and 70’s with the same views as Martin Luther King he wasn’t open to violence and was willing to go to jail if it happen and lived his life as an openly gay man.

    The Cause of the riots happen on June 28,1969 when police raided the StoneWall Inn which was a gay bar. Homosexualality was illegal in New York which was where the bar The Riot happen because people were resisting arrest and a crowd grew and became violent. The effects of this event was that the support for the LGBT increased and groups for equality were being formed across the country.

    The cause for homosexualaity for being founded as not a mental illness started when gay activist started to protest in San Francisco in 1970 against the APA. The APA started to figure out that its not a mental illness. The effect of this was that it was removed from the APA mental illness in 1973.

    John Lawrence apartment was raided due to a reported weapons disturbance when the police arrived they caught John Lawrence and Tyron Garner partaking in private and consensual sexual activities and were arrested due to the Homosexual Conduct law which criminalizes sexual acts between same sex couples

    The don’t ask don’t tell policy was set up to allow homosexual people into the armed forces by saying that if you are gay don’t talk about it or engage in sexual activities and in turn the base officer where they are stationed can not ask ones sexua preferance. This act was ended in 2011 by Obama stating that anyone can serve in the military no matter your race, creed, sexual preference or gender

    UNITED STATES v. WINDSOR
    In 2009 Thea Spyer died and left her estate to her wife who was recognised legally by New York state law. Because there marriage was recognized by federal law a $363,000 tax was imposed on the estate which would not be there if the marriage was recognized by federal law. The case was won in favor of Windsor.

    problems with gay marriage being accepted in a federal law has been a problem some states have legalised gay marriage and recognize them as legally married. The defense of marriage act makes sure that the benefits given to married couples are not given to people of the same sex that have been legally married in state law.

    The US Senate is blocking states on banning the gay rights to limit marriage to one man and one women. With this more states are legalizing gay marriage
