    The first german immigration was in the colonies in 1670, when the Germans came with the other nations to set up colonies for Britain.
  • The First big wave of German Immigration

    In 1790 100,000 germans moved to America. They came to Pennsylvania and made up 33% of the population. They also made up 12% of the Maryland Population.
  • Failure of Democracy

    The failure of the german revolution led to many Germans leaving. The amount was around 1,000,000 from 1850-to 1860, in 1850 alone there were 214,000.
  • Farmers moving

    In 1872 the Tsarist government made it impossible for German farmers to move to Russia causing massive waves of emigration.
  • Late 1800's

    Nearly 1.4 million Germans moved to the U.S. in the time period. This was the heaviest decade of moving to the U.S.

    In 1894 there were more than 800 German journalists were stationed in the U.S. with more than 2.8 million German-born immigrants. Later in 1910, the number of journalists would drop to 550 and the German-born immigrants would drop to 2.3 million.
  • Drop in German Population.

    The German population of immigrants in the U.S. dropped to 1.7 million. Also, the German language publications dropped to around 230 as from the 550 in 1910, 10 years ago.

    As Adolf Hitler came to power, many scientists, scholars, and musicians all came to the U.S. to escape persecution. Such as Albert Einstein, Bruno Walter, and Walter Dietrich.

    This marks the date of the 300th anniversary of Germans moving to the U.S.
