For the charter of Georgia, the reasons that James Oglethorpe gave were: it would give protection against the "savages," Native Americans, but he really meant France and Spain (their competitors), it would be a "charity"- people that were less fortunate(would be sent to Georgia, but those people never actually went), and it would help England's economy grow because they would grow mulberry trees that attract silk caterpillars resulting in silk production(so they wouldn't have to buy from Asia).
-
Happened during the Charter of 1732, when the 21 Trustees were in charge, and lasted 20 years.
-
-doctor -farmers -cooks
-teachers -butcherers -carpenters
-black smiths -etc.
These were the people that got to go the new colony instead of the people that the "charity" was for (the poor people in Debtors Prison)
115 People were aboard the Ann (the ship that first took them to the new colony, Georgia). -
After the Trustee Period, the King took over again because the Trustees were doing a bad job and quit.
-
The 21 Trustees were tired of all the malcontents and how poor the economy was (and this happened because they weren't able to run the colony how it should have been to be successful), so they quit.
-
The king ruled the colony, after the Trustees quit, for a little while until he could find a governor. He "ruled" the colony by himself for about 2 years.
-
He had been part of the Royal Navy for Britain, and started serving in the Navy at age 15, by age 41 he was sponsored and chosen to be the governor of Georgia during the new Royal Period.
-
John did a really bad job at running the colony, he was really selfish and only thought of himself, so the people hated him. Also, he hadn't had any in-office authority experience background, so he didn't really know how to run the colony.
-
He had important qualities, that John didn't have, that would help the colony. Ellis was smart, had wit, political ability, tact, and sensibility. He taught the people in Georgia self-government, and had tried to abolish slavery. He was also able to maintain a good relationship with the Creek Nation.
-
Poor health conditions is what made him have to leave in 1760, but he was after appointed to govern Nova Scotia, but he never went, and instead returned to England.
-
He continued and Ellis's policies and helped win the French and Indian war (1754-1763). His job was a little easier too because he had politically educated citizens. He also helped set the borders for Georgia.
-
Wright left Georgia on the "HMS Scarborough." His governing during the Royal Period is over.
-
They called it the "Rules and Regulations," and after elected Archibald Bulloch as president (of Georgia).
-
It was signed by Lyman Hall, Button Gwinnett, and George Walton in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (which brought the end to the royal period). The Revolutionary war was fought before independence was assured.
-
July 4, also known as America's independence day! This is the day ALL the colonies got freedom from there "mothers" (England-mostly, and then France and Spain too).
-
Wright returned and continued to govern the British-held portion of Georgia till 1782.
